The Seiko Cronos was produced from 1958 to 1967 and represented the high-end movement of its era. The initial models featured the old Seikosha numbering scheme with caliber 16, which later transitioned to caliber 5420 under the new Seiko numbering system. In July 1961, caliber 5420 evolved into the first King Seiko caliber 5440. The Seiko Cronos was manufactured by Daini Seikosha.
